” … It was a great feeling when the legislators sought CSL Capitol Gang out to get our feedback or to tell us what happened on the floor during voting on the bills we were following …” – Jeanette Hensley

Why did you become active with the CSL Capitol Gang?

I have the background and knowledge of how the process works and understand the programs available in the state for older adults. Having worked for 32 years for the State in Human Services and Medicaid I wanted to use my knowledge and understanding of the process to benefit Colorado’s older adults.

What were your expectations? Was it what you expected?

Yes, it it was busier this session than before.

Which bill was your favorite to work on and why?

Several, I would say my top 3 were the AND bill which allowed mental health counselors to complete the state form; having administered this program in the past, I understood the need to make appropriate amendments to the bill to make it a better bill for everyone. The next one was the mental health parity bill which again needed amendments to make it a better bill for everyone. The most important bill was the Property Tax Heat Rebate bill. This bill was designed to add renters in subsidized housing to the list of eligible recipients and to increase the income limits annually which helps all low-income individuals in the state.

What can we do next year to make it better or easier for you?

Provide parking reimbursement and mileage. When we have to stay for late nights to testify on bills, to provide some type of snack or dinner. To put your trust and faith in the decision that the CSL Capitol Gang is making, as things change quickly at the Capitol.

How would you recruit someone for the CSL Capitol Gang

It is a very interesting process to see our government work and to watch the interactions that go on in the committees. If you want to see changes in programs, this is the place to be.

Any other feedback you would like to share or a humorous interaction?

It was a great feeling when the legislators sought CSL Capitol Gang out to get our feedback or to tell us what happened on the floor during voting on the bills we were following
